Boston, August8, 2019 –FIs have many ways to differentiate in the card issuing space, but they rely on card issuing strategies to help drive higher activation and utilization. Instant issuance in branches is an effective way to get cards activated and in customers’ hands as soon as they open an account, but many FIs are also exploring digital instant issuance. Meanwhile, cards’ physical factors are changing—from the material used to make the card to the payment mechanisms in and on the card.
This report discusses card issuers’ priorities around contactless cards in the next couple of years, along with their plans to implement instant issuance for physical and digital cards, introduce dynamic CVV, and issue metal cards. It is based on interviews with professionals in the payments industry a well as with executives who have knowledge about the strategies and priorities concerning credit or debit card portfolios at 18 of the top 25 issuing banks in the United States. These interviews were conducted from October 2018 to March 2019.
